Re: devastation from insurance

thanks for all the help people theres some really great input here. im still going to try my best to get my sj insured but if worst comes to worst it looks like i might have to sell it, its a shame because i was looking foreward to the december meet up.
when i bought it origionaly i had cheap insurance in mind because it,s old, cheap, only a 1litre and on the v5 it says its an estate not a soft top, which would of course put the insurance up. but it turns out that insurance actualy goes up for the cheaper cars. i guess im stuffed whatever i do, the cars that are cheap to insure seem to be new/expensive and undesireable, i dont want a g-wizz.
insurance is just like a brick wall ive suddenly hit, i drove an old range rover in work the other day and i thought it was really cool but with this insurance stuf it dosnt seem like im allowed to want anymore, even if i could afford one will i ever be able to insure one?
thanks again everyone
joe

Unfortunately driving an old, cheap 1 litre doesnt matter, its all about the risk and the potential damage.

this young lad near me managed to hit a Bentley and cause £30,000 worth of damage!

Joe, if you do end up insuring a cheap car of your own, your policy should let you drive other peoples cars third party...

Now, if your dad say happened to own a Suzuki 410 you could drive that on your insurance ;)

just make sure you have your own car and your dad is the legal owner of the SJ as if there is a claim the insurance company WILL check..

I went with the Co-operative and got just over £2000 for my first year. However, it's £2000 for my second year too, because although I've got a years no claims, the premiums have gone up.

And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Did you shop around with different companies Ed?

They all put the premiums up the second year in the hope you can't be bothered to swap companies.

I have my Scorpio insured with Norwich Union for £219, last year it was £225 and when I got the renewal they wanted £390! I never had any claims or changes to my details, they told me it was because the first year had an introductory bonus..

I cancelled, checked on confused, com and Norwich Union had the best price.... £219!!!

Don't let them rip you off! :doublethumbs:

I had a friend recently running a Landrover Discovery who had been with AA insurance for years, just renewed it every year and was paying £800.

I stuck his details into confused.com and he got the same policy with another company for £240!!

thanks, you made a good point, any car has the potentioal to cause a lot of damage in an accident no matter how cheap the car is. of course though it can happen to anyone thats why there called accidents. in poland i think everyone pays the same amount of money for insurance no matter how old/young they are or what car they drive. i think that sounds fair really when the damaged caused dose'nt necessarily relate to your age group.

also i did try to get an online quote with the co-op but they said the quote could not be carried out or something? unfortunate because £2000 sounds all right really

I think you should stick with it mate, I reckon you can find a cheaper quote somewhere!

In the current insurance climate I think most cars will be around the £2k mark anyway!

I'm on my own policy with my Mum and Stepdad as named drivers and mine was slightly more than yours. :P

Helps that my Stepdad's a driving instructor and they both have a hundred years no-claims
