Yeah nothing much to add really, Its just gone 11months since my accident I'm still healing and on track to having the frame off in march time,

I've got an appointment on the 16th of december to do some x-rays so I'll do some updates with pics then,

I'm still walking with x2 crutches most of the time although i can mange with 1 if its not far.... and I managed a few hesitant step with out crutchs the other day. So things are definatly improving, i wish I had more to add to this thread but It all seems to be slowing down now, and nothing new or exciting is really happening!

I go to a gym group on wednesdays where loads fo frame wearers go, I was speaking to a girl there that has a frame on both legs  I can't really moan about my frame I've still got a good leg! apparantly she was run over by a friend who tooted his horn but didn't slow down

Poor gal.

My sister was in a car accident a few years back and got away with just having it all pinned on the inside. Doctors asked if she wanted the whole leg lengthening thing and the pin removed but she opted to stick with the short leg and i think the pin may still be in but im not sure.

Im pleased your progress is going well but cant imagine going thru such a long and probably painful at times healing process.

Bet you cant wait till march.

Yeah roll on march, but I'm over halfway there so its all down hill now,

I'm sorry to hear about your sister, i imagine the pin will still be in, they usually leave them in unless the patients are children (where the pin restricts blood supply to the bone and stops it growing properly) I would have had my lower leg pinned but unfortunatly the bone came out through the skin so they couldn't (because of infection risk) I did have my thigh bone pinned, I've seen videos of the proceedure on youtube... its not nice and Im so glad I was out for it!!!

As for the shorter leg I don't know about your sister but I assume its not a big difference, my surgeon said that generally people have have up to a 1cm difference in leg lengths normally so a small difference isn't a problem, They gave me the option of keeping my legs at different lengths, but I decided to have it sorted out because I already had the frame on and I didn't want the other problem that come with different length legs (like back and hip problems) I know it has been quite long road and I won't say its not been painful but It's worth it all in the end! In the grand scheme of things a year isn't that long, I'd rather spend a year getting better and knowing that I'm as best prepared for the rest of my life as I can be!

Like I said things could have been alot worse and I've really been luckily this last year in how quick I've been healing and how well everything has gone, Im sure it won't be long till i'm back to my old self

I still have quite a stiff ankle and have to wear some rubber banding to hold my foot up through the night.

Right then... I've been in to see my consultant today, we got some more x-rays and everything is on track to have my frame removed in march time, Whilst I was there we were talking about pinsites and I was saying about how the pin that goes through my calf muscle is always leaky, and he said "well you don't need it now we can take it out" so I had a pin taken out today. The nurse let me pull it out myself, it was an olive wire so I was excpecting it to hurt, but because it was me pulling it out, it just felt strange. It was abit like when you cut your nails and then touch something and the skin is sensitive, bizarre really

any way here are the x-rays you can see the lines where the bone broke but the grain show the new bone is growing well, I need to wait for it to 'consolidate' some more before my frame can come off.

As for myself things are getting better I'm getting about the house with out crutches and can mange longer distances with one. I've just passed the 1 year anniversary of the accident (on the 10th) and of having my frame on (the 14th) It's strange to think it has been on for so long as it doesn't feel like a year has passed

Todays the Day the frame came off, I was excited but prepared to keep it on if I had to, First thing they did was take some x rays

My consultant told me he was happy and the bone hadn't concertina(-ed?) or mis-shapen, even though it had been supporting my weight for a week or more,

I was quite happy, Its been 14 and 1/2 months since my accident and this feels like a real positive step in the right direction

So they started undoing the nuts and bolts and left me with just the wires poking out

Image

Image

they cut the tail end of the wires close to my skin and alchol swabed the area, most of the wires were straight ordinary wires and slid quite painless (and freely) through my leg, I had 4 wires that were stubbon the first in my ankle was pulled out with pliers and made a grating noise when the wire came out, the last 3 were olive wires which had a knob halfway up the length, they were more painful and bled, after all the wires were removed they bandaged my leg,

Image

I could walk on it after a few minutes (at first it felt like when you bang your knee and it goes dead and weak for a short while) and it felt great. Its alot less painful now, I don't get the niggly frame pain and walking is easier. I have to keep the bandage on till saturday when I can take it off and get my leg wet,

I also had some more good news this week, On tuesday Mrs tramp gave birth to baby tramp at 14.37, he weighed 9lb1 and is our first, Its a very exciting time!
