how do I get better mpg with SJ410?
how do I get better mpg with SJ410?
I can't upgrade the engine size yet as I'm low on funds, I have an electronic ignition I need to fit, not sure how yet, Scottie has my 5 speed box for me so that will help on long distance drives, I have another carb to fit as th current one has a screw missing from the choke butterfly, would a tune up from a professional help?
any suggestions are appreciated..

Free wheeling hubs if you haven't got them already, new plugs, leads, rotor arm, dizzy cap, etc

what mpg are you getting? I used to get around 25-28mpg with mine and that's about as good as they get really, might get 30mpg on a long run if you are lucky.
Re: how do I get better mpg with SJ410?
I'm getting about 20 mpg, not calculate it exactly just a estimate, how big is the tank on a 410? it took my half a tank to go to and from Wales, plus I drove to town twice that's about 4 miles each way, so half a tank got me 40 miles to Wales then 16 miles to and from town, then 40 miles back, that's a mixture of motorway driving and driving through towns, so a total of 96 miles on half a tank..

It's a 40l tank but halfway on the fuel gauge isn't usually exactly half full, in fact quite often it's nowhere near

Re: how do I get better mpg with SJ410?
Pah! I've run out of petrol about....half a dozen times now. It's all in good fun. I normally fill up when I get to about 200 miles. I tend to run out at about 250-ish.Jay18 wrote:as soon as my gauge drops below qaurter of a tank I put a tenner in it, last thing I want to do if run out of petrol lol..

If you want to get the best MPG out of a 410, IMO, you want have free wheeling hubs, a five speed box (I still need to fit mine), road tyres (I'd recommend Bridgestone), make sure it's sparking nicely (plugs, leads, dizzy cap, points), make sure it's well fed (best thing I ever did was fit an SU carb) and take the time to tune it.
I spent a couple of hours tweaking the carb and the ignition timing on mine and now she runs awesome. I normally get about 28-30 to the gallon just bouncing around my local area but on one or two occasions I've gotten as high as 33mpg.
I got 40mpg once but that was because I burnt a whole tank doing 45-50mph on the motorway the whole time.
And that's without the overdrive 5th gear.
There's three ways of doing things:
The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.
