Any ideas?

Post by TheBeast » Sat Dec 31, 2011 8:06 am

Hi everyone,
I'm in the dark here and just don't know enough yet so can anyone advise?
Had my truck out, engaged 4low to check ok (off road but turned anus round to get back onto road)...all was fine so stopped, unlocked hubs then like a numpty may have left it in 4hi and driven home (not sure). Took a run next day, realised not in 2Wd on box and shifted it ok, carried on but heard a rattly sound from front axle (dunno how long as cant hear much in mine anyway). Checked hubs free, carried on but after few miles got bad graunching grinding noise from front (binding scraping metalic noise). Stopped checked hubs, engaged hi and low disengaged again but only reduced after doing thisvfew times and reversing in 2Wd. Seemed ok but started again today in 2wd after few miles, by the time was safe to stop something tugged the steering whilst graunching! Tried engaging hubs and unlocking and it disapeared again. It's not permanent........Prop to front is ok and no sound when pushing in neutral....does it sound like diff prob or transmission wind up (jacked front right up but nothing happened), Cv prob or tbox? No play in wheels so not bearing, though maybe knackered fwh not disengaging? What's the best way to ID problem without stripping it down?
Sorry for the long post but more info best
Thanks for any advice guys....

I would hedge my bets on a CV/Hub failure, and would start by removing the FWH's, depending on what ones they are they will either be 6 bolts and the whole unti slides off, or you may have to undo the 6 top bolts, take the top part off, remove a circlip from the cv stubb and then undo ther remaining 6 bolts to fully remove the whole hub, then go for a drive and see what happens

Engage the hubs put it in 4wd and drive it slowly at full steering lock both forwards and reverse, you should hear some bad noises and feel it in the steering if its a CV.
