squeaky steering

Post by Smalljeep » Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:04 pm

my steering wheel is a bit squeaky, the anus sat under a cover for about 6 months which seemed to cause it, now when the wheel moves it sounds like an old violin being played badly. Is there somewhere to put oil to stop the noise, and is there some oil place for the steering box, its not really that heavy.

It could be the box, or it could maybe be the bearings in the steering column?
is it squeaking from inside or outside?

The parts that are marked on this diagram are the ones that should be greased in the first place.
I'd assume that if they need grease in the first place, they will be the cause of the squeak.

You can probably get to the top one by taking the steering wheel off... You might have to take the whole steering column out to get to the bottom one...

ok
hopefully the steering wheel one will cure it, the steering rack just seems ackward, although like most things on the suzuki its exceptionally easy to do.
One of these jeeps must be the perfect car to learn mechanicing on as im sort of doing, theres no stupid bits of trim with irreplaceable clips or fancy hard to get screw heads.

The only annoying clips I have come across are the dashboard clips which I have lost (ooops)

As you say it's not a massive job to take the whole column out... I had to swap mine due to knackered bearings last MOT.
It was squeaking for 6 months before the MOT...

ive lost a lot of original screws round the dash and other places, the beauty of the suzuki is that the big box of screws i have after breaking a few vitaras theres always something to do.

But anyhow i took the steering wheel off today and sprayed a bit of wd40 in behind it round the bearing and it sounds nice and quiet now.
While i was at it i took out the indicator stalk and wired up the horn to the button on the end of it, but my steering wheel has a horn button, i dont know why its got one as there already is the stalk nor can i work out how to wire it up so that the cable wont snap, so i just put washers in the back of the horn pad so its just locked solid into place.

i think my steering wheel is a vitara wheel so the horn doesnt have a ring connector on the indicator stalk for it so ive just got the stalk.
but at least there is no airbag to worry about.
