An associate of mine has agreed to lend me a hydraulic pipe bender to make my roll cage. Just wondering what steel would be best.

Thinking 2" with a 3mm wall CDS.

Your thoughts please.

Thanks
Jordi

Can you let me know how you get on mate? I really want to make my own cage as the price of ready made ones are staggering! I briefly looked at tubing to do it with and came to the conclusion it would also work out expensive just to buy the materials!
It could just be I was looking in the wrong place?

I'm gona ring round tomorro. Obviously i need long bits and i got a quote for 100mm box section of £65 for 7.5m. So i presume 2" tube will be cheaper as theres less steel to it. Im hoping 3 lengths will make a cage and tray back for it. when ive got some quotes i'll post prices and contact details.

Great thing about living near teesside is we're not short of steel stock holders.

Idealy you want seamless tube but that will work out more expensive so if you buy seamed try to make sure the seam is on the inside of the bend...as the tube gets bent it thin's the outer by stretching it so you dont really want the weakest point of the tube stressed.

On mine i used 1.3/4" 3mm seamed tube...it took 2and a half lengths to do the cab... 8-)

Hope it all goes well!

I was reading on http://www.rollcentre.co.uk and FIA spec cages are 45mm x 2.5mm. I've been quoted £18+VAT for 44mm x 3mm x 7.5m. I also reckon on two lengths so be about £50. Bargain. Just gotta get home and measure up.
