five speed gear box from a SJ410

Post by silverfox » Mon May 18, 2015 11:27 am

I acquired sometime ago a SJ410 "F" (reg), (a special edition of some sort).
The body was scrapped but I keep various bits to keep my Jap 1988 "E" reg going.

That special edition SJ410 had a five speed box in it.
It has a part number on the gear box of: CA 24771-80400.
I am not sure of its state of health nor am I sure it will fit into my Jap 1987/88 SJ.
The over all dimensions look to be OK at first glance.

Firstly will it fit?
Secondly is it worth the exercise of doing it up as my four speed works well?

Hope someone can help me on this one.
Otherwise I may have a five speed box available for sale.

Roger.

If the 4 speed works fine why go for a 5 speed.. I found it to be more like an overdrive gear.
If it ticks over...leave it

1st to 4th are the same ratio.

Personally I think the 5th gear is a good addition, drops the revs nicely at speeds above 50mph and makes long journeys a bit more peaceful

As a matter of interest the numbers on that box are:
CA 24771 - 80400 on the extension and 24711 - 80400 on the box.
Looking at it the dimensions they all look the same as my 1988 E reg but wasn't sure about the 1st motion shafts length and box to engine spacer plate width.
Thanks you for your help.
Sell or keep is now the question.
Roger.

I have a 5-speed 410 box, the input shaft is a different length to my, early, 410 box. I forget which is which but one has a bearing in the flywheel and the other has one in the crank? from what I recall I just needed to swap the flywheel so I guess the 5-speed is the short one.

Yes after 83/84ish they changed to the later style 4 speed gearbox with the shorter input shaft and the bearing in the flywheel, the 5 speed drops straight into these.
