We normally complain about the carbs freezing (admittedly SJ with SU) so why did they think it's a good idea to run the fuel return though the carb to keep it cool.

Yea, that is pretty confusing!
Unfortunately I have one more problem. ( I promise I'm sure it's the last one!) the engine now starts and runs fine for about 5 seconds, then the revs drop and it dies unless you throttle it. So basically it won't idle right.
I'm guessing something to do with auto choke, but I don't know how to check that.
Also there are two electrical connectors on the carb that I haven't connected yet, I heard one is an idle up valve or something, could this cause that problem?

One is the fuel stop solenoid......wire it up as it's what is causing your problem
