Alright lads!
I have two small dilemas. Well, they're not small, they're kinda huge, to be honest.
The first:
I have spotted an SJ the looks to be in good condition, in a town not far away from my school. It's a white, LWB, hard top convertable. However, it is not up for sale, but having looked at it (from the end of the road and on google maps), all I can summise is that it is perfect. Something about that perticular SJ, compared to all the other ones I've looked at, stands out like a mushroom on a meat feast pizza (sorry, it's the first 'Clarkson' metaphor I came up with). Maybe it's because it's the first LWB I've seen with my own eyes.....
Anyway, this SJ is in fact, not 'For Sale.' How should I go about politely asking the owner if he might be willing to part with it, and when? I'm going to need a car around December 2010 -February 2011, and the owner of said SJ will need to find a new car if he is willing to sell the SJ to me. As for how, should I leave a polite note under the windowwiper, write a letter and post it through the owners door, or should I be very bold and knock on the door, speaking to them directly?
The second issue is the insurance. The lowest online quote I have so far found is £2822 from Norwich Union/Aviva (Same company). This was without me being a named driver, and without stating the excess I was willing to pay, or if I had taken a pass plus. However, idealy I need to lose £1000 from that figure, so any advice that may allow me to do this will help. I don't know if this helps, but the second lowest quote was £3642, from Kwik Fit.
Cheers M'dears

Re: I need help with puchase and insurance
insurance wise, I don't know where abouts you live or your circumstances but my first years insurance was £998 but I was chuffed to get it under a grand, I would have thought you could get it at about the same, ring around different companys and try playing them off against each other,
as for buying it, I would go and knock on the door, when I had a vitara lwb sat on my drive I had x2 lots of people knocking on the door asking if it was for sale, If you have time on your side i suppose you could leave a note, but don't pin all your hopes on it because it may not even be for sale!

to be honest I'm a little shocked at that quote...perhaps I'm gettin old...(29 this year),I know they stick the new drivers but that takes the p#$s.....! personally I prefer the swb as I love driving woodland....so manoverability is high priority to me, plus your more likely to ground
....but hey,that's only my opinion
lwb's are a little harder to come by so if its in good condition (and he/she are willing to sell...it could be a high price.
in a nut shell...."nothin ventured...nothing gained!" if this is the motor for you then all you can do is ask...ring the bell and ask...if he/she would consider a sell....if not ask to leave your number in case they change theyre mind.

Re: I need help with puchase and insurance
I would knock on the owners door, and ask about it. and if they not planning to sell it ,to contact you if they ever change their mind.
I've had people leaving notes on my SJ , asking if i was willing to sell, i promptly throw the notes in the bin as i never want to sell my SJ.
Even had people asking me , but i always politely told them that they are wasting time asking.
As for insurance ,thats a headache itself to sort out as a new driver with little or no motor history.
Good luck
Dom
