Re: Not striking up
When it backfires through the carb, that usually means the leads are 180 degrees out.
The compression results seem okay for a "normal" engine.

Re: Not striking up
I'm really confused. Right I get it backfiring when the leads are in the opposite order right, when it backfires some sort of combustion is going on, the only things wrong is that it's not firing in the right order but when I put the leads in the correct order nothing.

Re: Not striking up
So maybe the leads are on backwards, and off a lot. Put the cap on 180 degrees backwards and while cranking slowly twist the dizzy as to adjust timing.. It might be so well off it still wont start when u turn the cap round?

Re: Not striking up
Had a bit of time off with the engine and been focusing on the bodywork side of things recently, now that's almost complete I had another crack at trying to get her started today. Tried everything you guys suggested numerous times but still no avail
Any other ideas ? I'm running out.

Re: Not striking up
Have you got a new timing belt on it now? Its worth replacing it as it will last a long time!
Sounds like a problem my mate had where the cam belt was 1 tooth out.
He managed to do it by revving the shit out of the engine!
Might be worth changing the belt if you haven't
when its on turn the engine by hand (I think its 4 times round??) and make sure the timing marks on the pulleys still line up?
Sorry if its something you've already done!

Re: Not striking up
Admittedly I haven't yet, I wasn't going to spend any money on the engine until I know it runs as I'm a tight git
Really 1 tooth ? I didn't think just 1 tooth out would make it not start, just run sluggish. Though as you can tell I'm no expert
Last time I checked it I was pretty sure both sprockets all lined up alright but I shall have another check tomorrow

Re: Not striking up
If it was me it I would start from scratch with the timing, you can find the procedure here. It's the same for both the the 1.3 and 1.6, just make sure the cam is on the compression stroke before removing the belt, whip the no1 plug out, put your finger over the plug hole while you turn it over until you can feel pressure on your finger and then rotate it to TDC (when the marks line up)

Fit the belt and make sure the dizzy is pointing at number 1 or only just before.

Re: Not striking up
Had a look at it today, when number one was at TDC on the compression stroke the rotor arm was pointing at number 4 on the dizzy cap so I popped it off and stuck it back on with it pointing to number one. At this point I was quite optimistic, cranked her over, unfortunately still no luck
What on earth can be wrong. This is driving me berzerk !!!! Oh and thanks for your reply regarding the roof the other day Scottie

Re: Not striking up
Started a new job recently and got talking to this old boy who is apparently a wizz on engines, we got talking and told him what problems I'm having with my engine and he say's he guarantees the timing is out. He said to get number one piston and TDC on the compression stroke, if I do that the intake valve should be closed and the exhaust valve should be up ever so slightly from being closed. Now the only time I have this is when the timing marks on the sprockets and 90 degrees clockwise from the marks on the casing. I'm going to take the belt off and put this right but just in case I am wrong, is this engine an not interference engine ?

Re: Not striking up
No the 8v g series engines are non-interference
