Su carb conversion complete
Su carb conversion complete
Hi there I've just converted my 1.6 Sj to run on an su carb. Very pleased with it!
I'd just like to share my setup with everyone as I know everyone does it differently!
I've taken the vac advance from the breather that everyone normally blanks off I'm not sure it will have the same affect as being directly behind the butterfly flap but it seems to rev and run superbly!
I made the manifold my self which really did take a few hours to cut and grind it about. It cost me £60 for the welding and the tube and plate cost me 20- 30 pounds from the bay! So anyone attempting it I'd definitely say give it a go!!
I have no flat spot with the recommend needle for the g16.
Guess Ill find out when I chuck the lambda sensor in!
Any questions just ask as I would never of attempted this without the brilliant and helpful advice on the forum!
Thanks guys

Re: Su carb conversion complete
Thanks for posting, just about to fit an hif44 to my 413. Re air intake I like your compact solution, did you make the adapter? On the std 413 engine the air intake is complex with the summer/winter routing, and I wonder why all that is really necessary, particularly in the fairly average UK climate - I was thinking of losing most of it, something like yours. The theory is let the engine breathe as easy as possible, are there any poss downsides to this simpler air intake side??

Re: Su carb conversion complete
I would of said water/ mud could get on the filter and soak it causing poor air flow at the least as a downside. But it does look good and I am doing the same soon but linking to the original pipework and filter. I bet that sounds good as well!!

Re: Su carb conversion complete
The filter is a temporary set up to get me home haha I'll put some pics up in the next few days of the air filter and pipe work I'm putting on.
It isn't really an adaptor it's a tube welded on to a 1.3 manifold.
Pictures speak a thousand words
As for off roading I wouldn't advise a cone filter open to air... A discovery 300tdi air box fitted to the passenger wing is a perfect fit and with a cone filter inside is perfect for mud and water ( not wading)
Any help or info just let me know!

Very tidy that. Any chance of a pic of carb from other side - see how you terminate and attach throttle and choke? I've got an idea for mine but not sure if it's a good one
p.s. noting the use of a library of Haynes manuals to support the mani... done this sort of thing before I suppose

I'll get a some pictures for you today as I still need to fit the choke cable.
The throttle cable is simply connected with a pinch bolt but the pinch bolt for the choke lever is missing so I'm going to make something today.
If you ever need a hand when it comes to fitting it I'm only in Maidstone.

Re: Su carb conversion complete
Really nice conversion.
Used to run a HIF44 on my 1275 Mini back in the day. Really is a sweet carb.
Just looking at the breather you used for the vac advance. I may have to try that with mine.
My SJ is running on an SU carb, but it's a lay-flat type, and I don't currently have a vac advance set up on it.

Re: Su carb conversion complete
Yeah try using it as mine is running nicely and it is definetly advancing so give it a try!
I'll post some pics up Wednesday or later next week! Just waiting for a 76mm to 57mm silcone hose reducer with a 90 degree bend to fit my big bore k&n cone filter lol
Oh and I ran out of time so haven't done the choke cable yet but I'll put the pics up ASAP
I spent half the day changing the rubber o ring on the dizzy as it was leaking oil only to turn the dizzy slightly upon removal then I wasn't sure which way to turn it and had retime everything! And worst of all one of the bolts stripped so I'm hoping it's tight enough to hold the seal but the only option is to weld some ali in the hole and drill it then retap but that's a head off job! Nightmare

Re: Su carb conversion complete
If it's the hole closest to the passenger side, I've seen loads of SJ heads with a longer bolt, and a nut on the inside (Get to it by taking the rocker cover off).
Little bit bodgey, but saves messing around trying to get a welder down there etc.
You can turn the dizzy by just taking the 12mm retaining bolt right out, it comes apart there too.
