Post by Russ24 » Tue Mar 09, 2010 12:06 am

hey again guys n gals.

had a paroozal to see if there are any plexi glas or plastic like window replacements of such.

becuase i have the Santana VAn with a lovely peace o'glass at the back im worried about mashing it into sand on the next avaliable branch.

obvisouly im aware that such plastics scratch easily. so i no they are not advisable for windsreens.

any ideas people?

Sounds like a good idea to me. My mate made one for the back of his drift car after he crashed it, and never had any problems with it. Should be easy enough to make one up, as all the glass in the SJ is perfectly flat.

yeah i thought it might be a good idea.

rear and side windows might a good idea but the windscreen (yeah is flat) but the wipers and any dirt/mud will scratch them up.

pretty sure plastic windscreen is illegal as its not to glass spec should you crash, i dont know whats worse in being thrown out the window with force or hitting a sheet of plastic in force

Yep, as you said, front windscreen has to be of aproval with the correct stamp. (mobile winscreens made me two windscreeens for my 62 split window camper, but they then ecthed
the correct stamp into the glass).
Side and rear i used tinted 3mm perspex. (limo black), its about the best you can get,
i got mine from a polycarbonat roof supplier. It came in a 8x4 sheet, and you cut it with a jig-saw very slowly.

id say yes, windscreen is a no no for anything but glass.

perspex also scratches easily and doesnt reflect light (i.e. the sun) as well as glass causing potential visibility hazards.

Rather than perspex use polycarbonate! It's about 100 times stronger!!!
