rollcage mountings
Re: rollcage mountings
Scottiej, you're right. Welding to the chassis is perfectly fine. I've welded brackets, jacks, rams etc to lorries and trailers with no problems come test time. Like you say it's if you start messing around with the structural side of things, extending, shortening etc that you then have to watch

Re: rollcage mountings
Brackets and mounts are fine, yes. But welding anything to the chassis that makes it wider or extends it is not allowed:

I'm not going to say that adding to the chassis would make VOSA twitchy/ask you to IVA the vehicle (although I kinda did say that in the last post, I shouldn't have because I don't know that for sure) but it *seems* that way to me.
This is specifically in relation to the 8 point inspection system (needing 8 points or an IVA). 5 of your 8 points MUST come from an "unmodified" chassis or monocoque, you cannot modify the chassis, except for boxing in a 3 sided chassis rail, or adding crossmembers. You cannot weld on stuff that enlarges the footprint of the chassis, but between the chassis rails is fine.VOSA wrote:It is important that the original chassis structure is retained unmodified, and while it is acceptable to strengthen areas and include additional brackets or crossmembers, It would be limited to additions within the existing chassis frame structure. Additional chassis structures, i.e. extending the outward parameters of the original chassis structure would be considered a modification.

Re: rollcage mountings
But you are allowed to move and change outriggers/body mounts without the need for an IVA, they are outside of the chassis rails and you could argue that the footprint of the original chassis extends to the ends of the existing outriggers. Anton you do seem far too paranoid about the whole IVA thing, look how many hundreds of disco/range rover bobtails are on the road without an IVA when vosa have confirmed that they 100% need an IVA. their main concern is people shorting and lengthening te chassis rails, rocksiders and cage mounts should be fine.
I'm sure if you called vosa stating that you would like to add additional safety features such as an MSA spec rollcage they should be fine with it.
Found this that confirming my previous statement.

Re: rollcage mountings
I read that the msa were complaining about 4x4s, because of spot brackets, hi lift mounts, spare wheel mounts and the like being welded to cages.

Re: rollcage mountings
Good to know, especially the bit about the shock absorbers - I want new shock towers at some point, so I'm going to have to work something out!
And yes, I know I'm a bit too paranoid about VOSA...

Re: rollcage mountings
and it said you can't drill your chassis, so drilling and bolting is out anton, unless you bolt it exteriorly to the brackets
It's not a question of how much you spend on your suzuki, but when your money will run out

Yes, I'd been thinking about that.kiwizook wrote:and it said you can't drill your chassis, so drilling and bolting is out anton, unless you bolt it exteriorly to the brackets
The idea I had was to make mounts that bolt around my chassis, clamping to it - like this (but not for a panhard rod):

Re: rollcage mountings
i was going to bolt my rocksliders on this way but there are fuel lines and brake lines going along the chassis rail so i decided to weld it on using scotties idea using a spreeader plate
