Airbag warning light

Post by Nick40 » Tue May 20, 2014 9:30 pm

Hi everyone,

I had an Engine warning light come on on my 2002 Jimny which turned out to be a Lambda sensor, all sorted now but no sooner had I sorted that than the airbag light stopped going out after I start the car it started a few days later so I know its coincidence and not linked.

Basically the airbag light now flashes when I turn the ignition on and then stays on solid once the car is running, any ideas where I should start trying to sort this one out?

Many Thanks

Nick

You should be able to pull codes from the airbag light, you would need to check the FSM which can be downloaded here:

whereabouts are you? I have a Suzuki scan tool.

Thanks for your reply Rhinoman, I am near Northampton unfortunately, I'm thinking of going down the process of elimination path, starting with the wiring under the seat and then moving on from there, I believe you can ground out one of the pins in the airbag reader to get a code, do you have any idea about this method?

Thanks for your help

Hi the jimny should have a shorting connector behind the panel below the steering wheel. Basically all the air bag wiring is protected by a yellow sleeve and the connectors are yellow. Find the terminal and using some wire earth it out. This then makes the airbag light flash a sequence of on offs which using the manual will translate into a fault code. Once you know what you are looking for then you can start looking for the fault. Word of caution don't try continuity checking with a meter with the bags connected the voltage could set them off, disconnecting plugs disconnect the battery and leave for a while to allow the system to discharge or pull the air bag fuse and allow to discharge not doing so could also set the bags off.

Thank you very much everyone for their help, my MOT is not due till November so I have plenty of time to figure this out, believe it or not I actually cant find the airbag fuse, I have tried both fuse boxes, one under the drivers right knee and one under the bonnet but cant find anything marked Airbag, maybe its in Spanish.

Thanks all

If the system is similar to the GV the fuse is actual separate to the fuse box and is in the airbag wiring loom. Follow the yellow sleved wiring under the dashboard it could be in inline fuse holder

Thank you Ginger_Boy, the air bag fuse is stuck on to the side of the main fuse box under the dash on the right hand side, nr the drivers right knee, I did the air bag test and got the code 21, which means drivers air bag resistance high.

So I got plenty of time to work this out, but I think its going to have to be someone who knows a bit about air bags to sort this one out unless someone else knows better. I think I will try and find either a decent auto electrician or a Suzuki specialist

That could be the clockspring or the airbag itself.
