The one in that vid I'm pretty sure is a DC motor... 9" AC motors are much better running at 96v!
You're right that the batteries are the limiting factor, but once its done its just a case a waiting for better batteries, then plug them in and go!
Anyway I live pretty close to everything I need to get to so the range isn't an issue, and I would be allowed to charge it up at work so I wouldn't even have to pay to charge it
I would obviously keep my petrol zook as well though!

Anyway running of a diesel genny the batteries are sort of a moot point!
People get the equivalent of way over 50mpg running this combo

I can't help but think that stripping out the motor, batteries etc from a crash damaged prius (so you've got regenerative braking etc) and going with diesel-electric could work a treat.
Although it'd be sacrilege to put anything from a prius into an SJ...
