And vallah. This is the heart. The only reason I ask is because I think the gearbox is on its way out and the clutch is near gone. I just thought it might be an option to put a better engine in but really I do quite like this engine

1.6 16v. Might be better to fix the other bits if the engine is ok.

I think that's the 1.6 8v spi engine isn't it? Don't the 16v have 16v embossed on the cambelt cover? :er:

Also if the gearbox and clutch are knackered why get rid of a good engine? The box will have to come off anyway...do the clutch then and fit a better gearbox.

The engine is good but all I was thinking is rather than paying for gearbox and clutch and then a few months down the line wanting to change it all completely I may as well have done it now. So mine is the 8v then? Are both the 8 and 16v good enough engines?. Thank you for all the replies, it helps me a hell of a lot. Thanks

Yep they are both pretty good engines... I probably wouldn't upgrade to a 16v unless your 8v was knackered though... its not worth the effort for like 15 extra horsepower!

Sweet. You brilliant people here at scuk have again pursuaded me. I shall source a gearbox and buy a new clutch. Many thanks all
