Hey guys I'm currently waiting for my new alternator to arrive, I brought the car without one so haven't tried to start it. A mechanic friend today said it would still turn over without it connected, so I tried an nothing not even a click. The oil light appears on the dash and all the electrics seem to work but that's it.
Is this normal for it not to turn over without an alternator connected?

Re: Alternator question
Should run fine without alternator.
Is the starter wired up correctly?

Re: Alternator question
Check starter is wired up correctly and check the wire that goes on the spade connector on bottom of starter, make sure battery is charged and you have wires to coil connected the right way and it should turn over and start without the alternator
if in doubt, FLAT OUT!

Now I think I'm about to prove my lack of understanding of an sj.
I have just been looking at my Haynes and it mentioned that the clutch needs to be depressed is this true?? Oops.

Not to start the engine. Obviously it needs to be in neutral of you will be chasing it down the road

Re: Alternator question
Spot on trotter the spade connector was off.
I pulled the fuel through, and after a couple of cranks she fired, bit lumpy but cleared and now idles sweet. Cheers guys.
