Hi People

I now have issues with winching, as i only have a humble x9, it means it is slow, and to do long winching means either i smoke my clutch to death, or end up winching with no drive, either way, not the quickest or best way, especially against the clock.

so one option, £4000+ of gigglepins finest, or sort the gearing.

I read someone where that someone used a vitara gearbox and transfer case and modded it to fit up to a sammy t-box, this interests me a lot as it means i can use the bigger clutch of the vit, incease gearing a lot, and leave me with an option for an Auto if needed

anyway, I am sure someone here has one of these, can't remember who, but basically, how much did it cost, was it a kit or a mass moddified thing, any info greatly received

I run twin transfer boxes before going into detail about it What gearing do you currently run?

Currently run a bogo standard 413 kja setup, only change from factory is the vit engine

I would just get a rocklobster transfer box then, it will drop the gearing more than enough for your needs, is cheaper and easier to fit. I hardly ever actually shift my doubler into low now that I have the rocklobster as well and that's on 33" tyres. Whilst its an awesome mod I don't think I would do it again unless it was a 100% Offroad only vehicle.

Just to addy bit. I agree with Scott.

For basic laning and the pay and play i've done recently i don't think i've used the lobster in low box. I was amazed how low it actually is, even on Sammi diffs with 33s.

Although a rock lobster is a simplier solution, i just wanted to know about the cost, I did try and email mr watt, but he wanted me to call and a rarely have time to speak on the phone.

the other reason for the dual case is that i like the idea of using a bigger gearbox with a larger clutch that the vitara box would offer, not to mention that i still want possability to try an auto in the future.

I will keep researching as i am sure i found a vitara that used to have a sammy t-box installed (k9rdj supazuki)

Burning out the clutch shouldn't be an issue once a rocklobster is installed as the gearing reduction takes the strain off it if that is the main thing you are worried about, also the sj gearbox is more than strong enough to cope with a 1.6 conversion.

How much do you use your SJ on road? If a lot then personally I wouldn't run a twin trasfer box set up, I've had mine for 4 years and in that time I've come to the conclusion that it's a set up that is ideally suited to a vehicle that is only used offroad and does not see high road speeds, it also really reduces the fuel consumption.

However it is also possible to fit the a Vitara gearbox without going down the twin transfer box route, the Auto needs more work though as you need to make an output support bearing set up as there is no rear bearing in the auto box, the shaft is supported by the tcase input bearing in the vitara set up. The manual has a rear outbut support bearing in the gearbox so it's a bit simpler to do the conversion, it's probably the route that I am going to take with my LWB.

With either set up the transmission tunnel needs to be widened and the gearbox crossmember needs to be modified or cut out and replaced.

Also a guy in australia makes quite a simple bearing support to run the auto and you just replace the rear oil seal with one to match the O.D. of the propshaft. Then you need a shorter prop to mate to the Tbox.

that is every bit of info i desire, (I am not good at searching)

looks like the route i should go down is the lobster, then vit gearbox to lobster (i do intend more power later on in life hence the larger box to cope)

I do use it on the road more than off, and the though of econemy never came into it before, and makes perfect sense, the amount of extra transmission resistance you have from another box will hurt, then i suppose there is a bit of extra weight, and the fact that if you need to change a clutch, you have to take the engine out rather than the gearbox.

so roughly how much are these lobsters, anyone got one?
