Rings or pcv valve?
Rings or pcv valve?
Hello,
My engine often starts to emit a cloud of blue smoke when I give it the beans. Its happening more often now, even when im driving along. Without thorough testing is there a way to tell if its the pcv valve or the piston rings? I imagine if it was the valve it would be smoking equaly at all times?
Cheers
joe

Lots of the time when a PCV valve goes you can hear it clicking... maybe take it off and give it a rattle?

Re: Rings or pcv valve?
ok, cheers mate.
ive taken it out and given it a shake and it does rattle. although im still not convinced that thats what it is as all the pipes going to it where split and its burning a lot of oil.
also i dont want to beleive its the valve as ive just got a new engine, hehehe.
so ive blocked off the valve for now and im gunnu drive it home tonight and see if it still smokes.
cheers

Re: Rings or pcv valve?
could you not take the pcv off your old manifold and try that?

Oh sorry, I ment its the old engine in the car that is smoking, so I bought a new engine.
Im fitting the new engine anywY coz its a 1.6 but if I can determine that its not the rings in the old engine than I wont throw it away when I take it out.

Re: Rings or pcv valve?
Yep yep:) I did a compression test when I first got it. Although it wasnt smoking then, all the readings where close to each other. But I guess a wet and dry test would be more difinative.

Oh she still smokes like a goodun:)
Which is actually a good thing coz it means im not just doing the engine change in vein.
Got thursday an friday off work to do the swap and boss is letting me do it in the workshop. Gunnu be an awsome two days! I reckon I can do the change in a day so that means I can go for a drive friday to test it, but where should I go?
Im thinking scotland:)

Re: Rings or pcv valve?
haha I would test the engine out before going too far
My engine's actually not too unreliable (except the escaping carb screws), shame about the rest of the truck haha
