dirty head
dirty head
so I was cleaning my engine, and I took my rocker cover off to clean it, and seen this
I also found that the oil was extermely slow to drain out like this
is there anything I should do about this, or should I just live with it?
what's the best way to clean this? take the whole head off, use degreaser without taking it apart? how much work, and how difficult is it to take the head off and clean and put it back together?I also found that the oil was extermely slow to drain out like this

It's not a question of how much you spend on your suzuki, but when your money will run out

Re: dirty head
If the engine hasn't been ran for a while the oil will have thickened up quite a bit.
Its quite surprising how much thicker it gets compared to draining a warm engine.

Re: dirty head
yeah, I guessed I had to take the head off. anyone done this before? how hard is it, how much work is it, any special tools required? what seals/gaskets will need to be replaced for sure?

Re: dirty head
I have photos of doing my girlfriends f10a head somewhere.
A head gasket set can be had cheaply on ebay here and I presume will be cheap in NZ too and includes all the gaskets and seals you will need.
Also worth changing the cam belt and tensioner at the same time.
No special tools required although a valve spring compressor will save heaps of time and swearing.

Re: dirty head
I'd chuck the rocker cover back on, then chuck some engine flush in with the oil, run up to temp for 20-30 minutes, then turn off and drain the oil while its still warm.
This should clear most of the gunk out of it!

Re: dirty head
that sounds like a good idea twiss. I'll have to get it on the engine stand, and hook it all up, but I might try that. if that fails, I might have to strip it all down and clean it, although the previous owner said it might need a new head gasket in future, don't know what he based that on, but I mighty give it a think, and treat it to a new headgasket anyways.
