Greetings from Australia.
I have a 1993 Suzuki Sierra, 1.3 litre 5 speed. In 6 years ownership never had a problem with this great car until now.
Recently both heater hoses needed replacement, both sprung a leak within a day of each other. Since then, I have noticed the engine idles vary high, between 1500 and 2000rpm. I have been told the auto chokes on this model are activated by hot water, both hoses leading to the carby get hot so I assume water is running through OK. Sometimes it idles normally, then it speeds up to 1500 to 2000 even when fully warmed up.
By accident I discovered I can drop the revs to normal by switching on the headlights but after a few minutes of driving the revs speed up again!
I imagine this is still an auto choke problem. Is there a simple fix? I live in a country town and cannot immediately get to a repairer. I would be happy if, temporarily, I could at least disconnect the auto choke (if that is indeed the problem) and stop the engine revving like a speed boat! Any help appreciated!!

Fast engine idle
Re: Fast engine idle
Firstly hello and welcome to the site.
Firstly have you made sure your water system full bled up and free from air?
Secondly the carb (i take it that it is an asin?) are prone to auto choke problems. I think you can disconnect the wire to them that controls the auto choke, but i am not 100% sure as it has been a while since i have played with the 1300 standard carb.
If the problem persists it would be wise to change the make of your carb on your truck to either a webber, or an su. The webbers come in bolt on kit form, but are prone to stalling on slopes.
You can also look into fitting an Su but you would need to be able fab up some sort of adaptor plate.
There is one more less common problem.. just depends what you have available. If you have many Subarus you have knocking about.

Oh and when you turn the lights on the revs drop... Thats normal, just shows that your alternator is working
Hope some of this helps. Henry.

Re: Fast engine idle
Thanks for reply. In the end I found a way to disconnect the auto choke. It's barely needed anyhow, especially with summer coming up! It doesn't get colder than about 14c even in winter, so all should be well.
Re the headlights, I know engine revs drop a bit when you turn headlights on, but I meant that it drops from like 2200revs all the way back to about 900. Then if you preseed the accellerator it shot back up to 1500 - 2000.
Thanks for your advice about carbys, I note many Suzuki sites recommend SU carbies, are they a lot better than the standard one?
