Smokey Engine

Post by Gardiner » Sun Jun 16, 2013 6:14 pm

Ok so the 1300 engine I have decided to give her a decoke etc.
Stripped head down decoked it re-ground valves etc.
Put her back together started on the button sounded great then after 5 mins started smoking out of exhaust a proper oily smell.
Run it thinking it would clear and guess what it didn't :yuk:
Lifted head back off just in case a valve stem seal had shifted etc but was fine.
Put her back together and it was still the same.
So I think now maybe it is the rings not sure how taking head off could affect but it cant think what else it is ????
Any more ideas ??????

Firstly did you replace valve stem seals with new one when rebuilding the head.
Secondly when you took the rocker off to check was there a lot of oil in the cylinder head i have seen it before where the incorrect head gasket or missaligned head gasket can block the oil feed or return ports to the cylinder block, as excessive oil in the cylinder head could cause this problem by allowing oil up breather pipes into the inlet manifold.
Hope that helps.

Have you checked the PCV valve? What were the bores like? sometimes if the engine is worn the extra compression just pushes oil past the rings.

Ok I have taken valve out it was a bit gunked up cleaned it can now hear ball bearing rattling.
I started her up again and thought great a few minutes later started smoking again :brows:
I have found my Compression tester and tested compression it not sure what reading should be but mine are
Bore 1 26 psi
Bore 2 25 psi
Bore 3 25 psi
bore 4 25 psi
What thoughts on this then ???

was that with all plugs removed and the throttle held open?

If so then you have quite a major problem.

I find it extremely hard to believe that it would start if that was correct.

What were the valve guides like when you re-lapped the valves in? Did you check the valves for wobble. They may feel okay now with new seals on them as the will be flexible, but try wobbling them in the guides.

If you turn the head upside down when removed, do they hold petrol? It might be that you have lapped the valves with worn guides and effectively "spoilt" the existing valve seats, this will cause a loss of compression.

As Rhinoman says, that reading is very low, so surprised it runs too. Can you borrow another gauge to check the readings?
