What paint
What paint
Started work on the body work today, im planning on doing it one pannel at a time, cause i haven't got time to do the whole thing at once. Iv got one wing pretty much ready to paint but not sure what paint to use. I was thinking of using the spay on smooth hammerite, would this be suitable? or should i just use normal car paint??
Im not expecting a show room finish, i just want to sort out the rust.

Re: What paint
no not hammerite.... it will look like poo! if your going to spend time getting the panals nice, then i would suggest,, zinc primer (helps hold back rust) then spray primer, then your colour choice in spray celle. But buy the paints from a automotive paint supplier, they will be proper materials,, not the crap from half@rds.. if your on a tight budget, use the small 4" or 6" roller and use the car based paint which is bushable.. ive had a ex finish on a old van we done.

Ok cheers Carnut, i just did a bit of research into the hammerite thing on the web, and most people agree with you that it will look poo. Il try and get some of that primer today to cover the one panel i have ready, and il put a little more thought into the top coat.
Thanks for the help

Re: What paint
I agree the Hammerite looks cr@p, I used a foam roller on an old car once with some paint from a local car shop and it turned out great, try to get it as smooth as possible and dont put too much on the roller at one time

Re: What paint
Well iv only done one panel so far. I haven't got a before picture, but it was in quite bad condition with a few rust holes in it. Here's a picture of it after, its only primed but the red oxide primer i used is nearly the same as the original colour any way.
The plan is to get rid of the rust, and prime it one panel at a time. Then hopefully borrow a compressor and spay gun, off my brothers mate and do the top coat in one go.

Re: What paint
Looking good! As a sprayer id have to recomend a 2 pack to spray with as it sticks like glue and lasts but the down sides are its very bad for your health! So id recomend a good mask! If its a non-mettalic colour your best to get this in a gloss it will save you the expense of lacquer! The hammerite idea to be honest wasnt a bad one that smooth finish stuff availiable just spray light coats and let each coat go tacky b4 the next, it can give a reasonable finish. If u get good coverage and no runs you'd be surprized what some g60 and a mop will do to any paint job!! Hope ive been some help
