engine change in an SJ 410????

Post by powell1832 » Mon Jul 27, 2009 9:52 am

Firstly a quick note to say hello, I am new here and new to the whole SJ scene, so please be gentle!!

I have just bought my very first SJ410 and even though I have only had it for a few weeks I love it!
However I do find it a little underpowered especially when going up hill. So was wandering if anyone had advice as to my best course of action? Do I

1) Change the engine for a Vitara engine
2) try to tune my Engine
3) Change it for a 413 Engine
4) Scrap all the above and try something different

Please bear in mind that I am new to this, however do have some basic tinkering Knowledge, so I am looking for something that is relativly easy to do, without costing the earth!

Thanks for your help.

By the way I intend to do quite a bit to the old SJ and will be keeping a photo Diary which in time I will post on the site.
Also if there is anyone in the Miadstone area who fancies talking me through the process then just let me know.

Thanks Richard

Hi Richard, and welcome to the site.

Firstly, as you have the 410, it runs a different engine, gear box, transfer box, radiator, and some small electrical differences to the 413/sammy.

The T box is good, keep that in. It is lower geared than the 413/sammy T-Boxes and worth more. This will help with your offroad gearing when/if you come to fit larger tires.
The 410 has different engine mounts (because of the different engine) than the 1.3s. To put the 1.3 in you will need a 413/sammy gear box and engine, and also the sammy radiator as they are double cored.

However if you wanted to put the 1.6 vitara engine in, you would need to put the engine mounts in different positions than the 1.3, and you would also need the 413/sammy gear box. Ontop of this you are going to need

1.3 fly wheel and clutch
1.3 clutch cable and cable holder
1.3 dissy
skinny starter motor
vitara alternator (you will have to wire the vitara plug in so get that too)
And you may also need a small body lift, and a sammy bonnet to get the bonnet to close with the new engine in.

all the above is as henry said except however

As far as i'm aware you only need the body lift for the 16v injection vit engines, if you stick with carb'd vit engine you shouldn't need to do this as they are not as tall. There is also a lot less wiring involved as there is no ECU. also if you fit a 16v injection you will need the sump & oil pick up off a 1300 engine.

Personally i have been driving around in a 410 with 31s fitted for nearly 2 years (until i started the rebuild) and yes they are a bit underpowered on hills but off road I think they are better than the 1300 and that is where it counts ( i always kept up with 1300s on the road as well!) i would stick with the 1000cc for a while and do some other mods to improve it off road like a small lift, some mud terrains, a snorkel etc until you get used to it a bit more before you go for a biggger engine! you could always fit a HIF 38 SU carb to get a little bit more power out of it. (i've got one if your interested?)

Trust me its more fun to be out in the mud than spend all your time modding your truck

Sorry must add to what i said before, you will need one and the bonnet if you want to use the standard carb, and air box.

Hi again

thanks for the reply's, I agree with Scotty J, at the moment I think I am going to put the engine swap into the too difficult box untill a later date.

I have mud tyres, and will be ding a 2" lift in the next week or so, I will also be fitting some wheel spacers to give it a little extra stability.

I am definatly interested in the Carb (just let me know how much you want for it), Is it the same as an SU carb that I have heard so much about? also if anyone has any ideas of some other little tweaks that I can perform to get the most out of the Engine, (new air filters etc).

A good service always does the enigne good. Make sure the fuel filter on the inside of the rear drivers arch is clean.

The 410 are better than the 413 offroad, seem to have more grunt, and love to rev!

cool no worries!

out of interest how are you doing the 2" lift? if it's with lift shackles then i wouldn't bother and I would save your pennies as they do more harm than good and reduce your approach angle! best to go for some lift springs or one of the off road armoury shackle reversal lift kits IMO

As for the carb, it s the one that you have probably heard lots about, i've never ran it on mine though as i bought it and then went for the 1.6 conversion before i had a cahnce to fit it, it was running fine on the truck it was taken off though as it was one of my mates who's engine went bang!
Am after around £40 for it i'll post out for that as well if your too far away to collect? out of interest where are you from?

Hi £40 sounds fine, do you have paypal? if not I could send a cheque. I am in Maidstone.

Apart from the Fuel filter is there any other odd things I need to look out for on the service?

Thanks all

Yerp if you want to lift on the cheap, dont use the shackles.

They will lower the truck, smash your springs, ruin your approach and castor angle.

Cheapest way.. add a leafs. 2" of lift! no side effects either.
