New Years Day on salisbury plain

Post by ScottieJ » Wed Jan 02, 2013 12:27 pm

Had an awesome day out on Salisbury plain yesterday! Was good to meet you Steve as well

A few pics, Imber was open so we went to have a look there first before venturing onto the plains.

Found a good water crossing, I had to take the plunge first and luckily it wasn't too deep as none of us have snorkels

Here goes then. Had to hold the best 3 back until I can make up my mind which to use for POTM. ;)

All 3 of us had a quality day out. The dog is still curled up in an aching muscle ball now from all the balancing on Helens lap yesterday!

Starting with the drive from Westbury White Horse over to Imber. Luckily Scottie managed to turn the wrong way taking us past some dilapidated tanks.

After realising where we went wrong it was a quick turn around at a tank wash station and drive back to Imber village.

Standard offroader parking/abandonment. Left the trucks at the side of the road and went for a wander.

Spotted the village pub from the top of the hill by the church and hastily got back in the truck to head over there

But it wasn't to be! Hasn't served a pint since December 1943

Image

We still popped inside but there was no landlord in sight! Just some yobs parked up outside

So we headed off out onto the main training area

Finally the last water crossing which was a bit touch and go for a moment but went OK in the end. Wet feet all round! :D

Great day and good to meet you Steve.

Shame you couldn't have carried on North-wards with us to the water, it gave her a good clean off underneath and you might have got to try out your strap ;)

Ended up just outside Upavon so not too far from home.

Decided which photo of the other 3 I'm going to enter for POTM so that freed up these 2 for here.

These two tanks were amazing with all the nice rusty bits falling off and long grass hiding their bottom halfs.

This shot was fun and felt very fitting. A silent Sailsbury Plain all bar the sudden noise of the 2CV that pottered past while I was getting the camera out and positioned itself perfectly under the truck. Seemed very authentic although SPTA isn't quite post war France. :D

Some tidy photos amongst that lot. Hopefully i'll have some to report back with tomorrow. Off greenlaning at an undisclosed locations yet to be confirmed with folks i've never met. So should be pretty awesome. Just spent the last 3 hours in a panic welding and bolting all the bits together that werent neccessary for road use but are vital for off road. Like bumpstop.

Are you entirely sure you were allowed where the tanks where though? I've been on a lot of the training areas down that way and most have big signs MOD keep out kinda thing going on.
