Painting Chassis??

Post by coozer » Thu May 21, 2009 9:54 pm

I nearly have the body off my SJ and the chassis looks in very good un-rusty condition, unlike the body above!

I reckon a wash and general clean up is all thats needed before a coat of paint.

What's the best stuff to use on the chassis? I want to put a good rust proofing agent on and the top coat will be military olive drab.

POR 15 the way to go??

Cheers,
Steve

hi, i dont think you can beat good old red oxide.... plus you can paint over it.. try to avoid scaultz or brush on underseal as it can trap moisture, then it rust from under it. make sure you wire brush the chassis first!!. i done my old 62 vw split screen bus some 20yrs ago,, still looking good.

I read an article i think in Car Mechanics magazine recently. That and my personal experience lead me to suggest stone chip protection stuff that sprays on and then paint over that with copious amounts of a pale colour of hammerite.

The brush on stuff can trap moisture under it as has been suggested although can be very good if applied properly, however, it comes off all over you when working on your car if it's waxoil and you can spend ages getting it off your skin if you rub up against it and clothes get ruined by it.

The stone chip protector stuff is hard and painting over it allows stuff to not get stuck to it. a pale colour paint allowd you to see when it needs repainting over, perhaps touching up yearly.

Hope this helps.
