when it comes to brakes and suspension it is worded as 'inappropriate modifications' I.e. unsafe mods from what I have read. so drums converted to discs or bigger calipers and discs should be fine as long as it is done well and safely.
As for emissions I think your MOT tester is a bit confused? How can an engine swap be classed the same as a remap? I haven't actually read anything that states the emissions levels are changing so any sj that is set up properly should still have the same 3.5% HC pre-cat limits. Unless it is a late model spi and had the cat removed. Either way how is a garage going to have all the equipment to test every ecu's map without having to fork out thousands of pounds. My golf is chipped yet it still meets the standard emissions limits and there isn't even a diagnostics port on a digifant ecu so the only way they would know is by stripping the ecu down?
As for tyre size, I've read it's 'tyre size compliance with tachograph information plate'?

Yup thats how i read it
Basically anything before 1993 (and upto 95 for some cars) shouldnt have to worry about all this.
cars from 1969 are even easier to pass

Good good that's re-assuring that I'm not the only one that read it like that.
I popped over to the garage my dad works at today and the guy who does the MOTs actually asked me when he was going to get to MOT the SJ, sounds like he's almost looking forward to it as he's seen all my pics on Facebook. At least I know it won't fail on rust

Thats promising scott!
My tester said he has the re quired emmisions for each car, a remap would put emmision levels up? I dont know.
As for the sj, there has to be some severe carb tweeking for mine to pass

Just wondering, do you guys think it's worth retro fitting a cat to my sj whilst I'm restoring it, just thinking it will be easy to do it while im rebuilding it, rather than later on if it fails the mot.

I've been toying with the idea myself, but only if it fails repeatedly. You shouldn't need one if the engine's running right and your truck's getting a resto done so I doubt you'll need it. If you do have a problem, often you can just turn the mixture screw out a few turns before the test, and screw it back in a bit after, so the cost of a CAT becomes unecessary.
However, if you have a CAT lying around that you're not going to have to pay for, there's no real reason not to fit it. You get peace of mind and help the environment a little bit.

Your sjs should easily pass the emissions easily if set up correctly without a CAT.
There is no need to fit one 100s of sjs get through emissions every year without one.

Yeah if you can't get your emissions to pass MOT levels, I'd say there's something wrong with your engine!!!
Mine has a blowing head gasket, starting to get oily! ... and it's still 1% HC
Also remember, if its not burning correctly you'll just knacker the cat really fast anyway!

I only ran it for to drive it on and off the trailer when I picked it up before i tore it to apart. It sounded pretty sweet so I think I'll leave it till the time comes then. What effect do cherry bombs have on a sj?
