Lift shackles

Post by Turb() » Mon Apr 25, 2011 6:30 pm

My SJ has got some lift shackles on it by the looks of it, they came with it.
From reading on here they are not good news and decrease the life of springs? This is not good as I have recently put new springs up front!
Where can I get a set of standard shackles from??? And how hard are add-a-leaf kits to fit if I can get my mits on one? As I hear this is the way forward!

if it already has some shackles fitted, you can re-drill the plates and cut the ends off to make the shackles the correct size, I'm not sure what the exact size between hole centres is but it doesn't need to be exact - as long as they all match!

as for add-a-leaf some people swear by them but other people have trouble, don't fit them if you have parabolic springs as the leafs just bend after the add a leaf. As for fitting pretty simple you will need some axle stands to hold the body up while you remove the springs and the U-bolt nuts maybe corroded and require some man handling, depending how badly corroded they are it may be worth buying new U-bolts while your doing the add a leafs (Dave at llama4x4 sells them along with the add-a-leafs & brake lines) also you may require brake lines as the originals may be too short. the fitting itself is simply removing the bolts at either end of the spring and the U-bolts to get the spring off, then you remove the nut in the centre of the pack add the add-a-leaf and fasten back together (the kit comes with instructions and includes long threaded bit to replace the nut & bolt at the centre of the pack) - certainly not rocket science but a difficult job if you don't have the kit to hold the body & chassis whilst your working under it!

Thanks for the info. Well I recently fit new springs up front anyway so U bolts are fine up that end!

Parabolics are leaf springs where the leaves themselves don't actually touch all the way along the springs (they do touch but it the minimum of places).

They give you more flex basically...

Sounds good, how much do you want for the shackles then? Plus the postage?
