Re: Santana SJ413 1989 Ignition problem
maybe the valve in the fuel pump i would see if its the type you can take the top off to see if there is any dirt in it if not just replace it but first check the fuel pipes under the bonnet the heat cracks them and a friend of mine a pipe split and it caught fire /check all the pipes and the fuel filter at the rear [plastic]you can see the filter under the offside wheel arch at the rear[maybe blocked just replace it ] let me know how you go on tony

Re: Santana SJ413 1989 Ignition problem
Latest report!!....
chased the petrol line back, no blockage. Because the filter was half full I decided to purge again, several times & woah! - there was fuel! Hooked everything up and she started!!
Went to the petrol station, filled her up - and it runs perfectly - not a splutter!
Observation: - guage was reading half full before - I put 38litres in to fill it - and it reads "empty" solid!! - so there is a guage/sensor problem.
It runs perfectly now, not a falter, but I think some of my tinkering on the way could have eliminated compound problems - like the coil/dist HT lead, I've now got an intermittent fault on the rev counter which is on the same spades as the ign 12v. I understand some of the Santanas had loom degradation & I wonder if this is lurking in the background as well?
Two things I will look into -- 1) reloom or partially reloom the front bit! 2) I'm still interested to explore the possibility of dist change to a contact breaker option (I take on board the comments made earlier, - but for the kind of fun motoring we have here - at least with CBs you can keep them going, but the semiconductor block in there is a black-magic I was trying to get away from!!)
Happy days - at least its cooled down a bit now! - but I think the mozzys like sweaty auto oil infested flesh

Re: Santana SJ413 1989 Ignition problem
Ha! - all part of the journey! ....and I'm looking forward to it's continuation.
Thanks to rockinsuzuki58 and Scottie and Robbie who have all helped me with my new venture.
I really must deal with that fuel guage! - but I've already learnt a lot on the way.
I'm still interested to know if there is a Contact-Breaker Distributor from an older model that would drop straight in should I have to revisit that at any future date, - as a fun car, I can live with the downside of points, at least I can understand & fix them! There are some breaker-yards somewhere around my home so I might just see if I can find an old one to salvage from. Be interesting to know which one would fit?
Anyway, until my next problem - thanks all for the support!
