Has anyone done any other engine swaps other than the 1.6 vitara lump?
I have 2 sj410's, one has already been converted with a 1.6 and is loads of fun with loads of power. but the other is out dedicated offroader and is still on the little 1l. If there is no other option it will be getting a 1.6 also but i have various engines laying about but was thinking about using the 4y 2.2 petrol lump out of the hilux mk3 i have as i will probably end up putting or at least trying to put in a xjs jag v12's i have availible. The 4y is a good strong engine just lacks a bit for the heavy mk3. And to be honest i really want to recycle it as its a very good engine thats never let me down.
I also have a toyota straight 6 which would be over kill and probably too long but as another option.
The 3rd option would be the v12 but i dont think there will be anywhere to sit if i fit that :p

Re: Other engine swaps besides 1.6 vitara?
The main thing to think about with sj engine swaps is weight......put anything that weighs too much more than the stock engine and it completely messes up the weight balance and they end up too front end heavy.
Has to be an all aluminium engine really.
Also you need to think about transmission options, there's not enough room for a long transmission and the tbox and axles can't handle too much power.

I've been thinking about the Ford 1.0 ecoboost 3 cylinder. In theory it's a great swap - light, powerful and crazy economic, but I don't think the ECU issues are going to be surmountable without a fat wad of wonga.
I think that you should be looking at the 1.6. Not much else makes sense.

Yea I guess, really wanted to do something with the 2.2, I feel bad about taking it out lol
Ecu's are easy enough on older engines, newer engines are all can bus.

There won't be a lot of space with the XJS gearbox and the exhaust manifolds come down were the chassis rails are - there won't be any room for a rad either. Someone tried this years ago but it wasn't finished.Tommyboyblitz wrote:i will probably end up putting or at least trying to put in a xjs jag v12's i have availible.

Re: Other engine swaps besides 1.6 vitara?
I was joking, would have to sit on top of the engine and have a drive shaft do a u turn out of the back to connect up with the wheels haha. the v12 with gearbox is about same length as the sjRhinoman wrote:There won't be a lot of space with the XJS gearbox and the exhaust manifolds come down were the chassis rails are - there won't be any room for a rad either.
