Grand Vitara 2001 1.6 intermittent fault

Post by evans797 » Mon Mar 23, 2015 5:20 pm

Hi folks,

I hope someone can shed some light on this problem.
I've had the car about a month. All good except occasionally and usually after a decent run when it's hot it would struggle to idle with the revs dropping down to about 4-500rpm,then after a moment would be ok again.. Then yesterday after a similar trip it cut out just as I was joining a busy thoroughfare. Only after pumping the gas several times would it start, and then it ran really very rough (like an old tractor) with slapping felt through the accelerator peddle. With pumping the gas and slipping the clutch (as there was virualy no power) the only way of moving forward. Luckily I was only a few hundred yards from home. This morning I asked my local garage to have a look as they are just around the corner. They say it started first time, ran in the garage for two hours then test driven with no issues. There were no diagnostic codes on the reader. They are suggesting it may be a faulty ignition coil but can't be sure unless it does it when at the garage. Any ideas?? Can sensor, CAT, coil?? It's had new plugs and fuel filter recently.
It's rust Jim, but not as we know it..

Does the coil pack get hot with the ignition on but the engine not running? I seem to remember that the coil getting very hot is a sign that it is breaking down internally but not sure if this applies to newer style coil packs.

Sounds like a sensor issue if you ask me...

I would start by downloading the full service manual from Rhinoman's website and check your sensors against the figures that are specified in the manual...

Thank you. Will try the heat test and download the manual. :-)

If you test your coil as specified in the manual you will know if the coil is fried..
I think the gv has a proper coil pack so the above test may not apply
