Transfer Box clunk

Post by manora » Sat May 23, 2015 3:53 pm

Hello
New to the forum so please be kind :D
I've just bought a Jimny '02 Manual on a private sale, no come backs.
I've notice a loud "clunk" on take up and over-run and when rocking the car in gear. I've traced it to the transfer box.
Is this common and is it likely to give up the ghost rapidly.
A bit of research leads me to think it's the chain. Is it possible to replace just the chain or is it cogs as well?
So many questions, sorry but one more, where's a good source for the bits I'll need if I go for a rebuild rather than second hand.
Thanks
Peter

After much disconnecting of prop shafts and swmbo rocking the car along with a big bar on the transfer box rear flange I am 99% certain it's the box. Hope so anyway, just ordered one of ebay.
The car has about 70k, seems from my googleing that is about the time it can occur.

The transfer box arrived today and a couple of hours later was installed and tested.
Glad to say my diagnosis was correct and all is now well.
I took the chance to replace the mounts with these http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/u ... ount-large
They fitted ok but do seem a little hard for general use but I'll give them a few road miles and few hours off road before making my mind up about switching back to standard.
