Full tank of fuel, but I rebuilt my freewheeling hubs before going away to the hilux pickup club's meet at Sibbertoft on the weekend, and I swapped out the flanges for them.

I think I may have not sealed them properly, and grit got into the axle and destroyed the bearing. Took it off and couldn't see any grease in the bearing, so I think when I bent the axle the seal may have been compromised (we did fit new seals when we did a full rebuild about 1500 miles ago) and the oil seems to have washed away all the grease in the bearings, so the 50 miles or so of greenlaning I did after visiting the offroad site (which has mud like grinding paste) was enough to put the bearing out of commission. I *think*.

The other explination is that me and Chris did a piss poor job of rebuilding the axle.

As I said to Chris earlier today, I don't know how, but this is his fault. It just is.

:D

Got a new axle case waiting for me, so I'm going to build up the new axle with the ball trusses I got from Mike, truss it better, make it unbendable, fit the chromoly's, the rear ARB (and maybe this time even hook that bad boy up!) and swap out the buggered leaf spring on the driver's side all at the same time.

And fit bumpstops.

My rear brakes are also right on the edge too. The pads are about 1700 miles old, and the wear indicator was rubbing on the right rear. Not sure if it's just because Rover parts are poo, or because I've done something stupid.

So I'm going to pull all the wheels off and check everything all round, it may just be that the rover callipers have been binding?

Gamble - I have a set of outer seals, I was just so tired when I fitted them, something in my brain didn't click that I hadn't fitted them.

But when I opened up the hubs, they were clean inside, I think the crap got in behind the hub. I'll give it a smear of silicone sealant next time I think.

I gave Ben a go in the SJ:

He almost immediately sunk it to the bottom of the brown lagoon:

After he'd been out in it a few more times he mentioned that he was selling a Hilux soon, and he's now thinking of getting an SJ instead of another Hilux! He couldn't stop coming back to the thing.

If he does, he'll be the second Hilux owner to buy an SJ after driving mine! I must start getting Land Rover drivers in the driving seat...
