Something forward control.

L/R 101, Volvo C303, UAZ "broadloaf", Pinzgauer.

Or if i had the cash and was just for off road use I'd get a tracked Viking.

I may be slated but I've always had a soft spot for land rover series 2 ambulances, I also would have anything Russian - lada, uaz, Tatra, zil & especially a gaz 66. But I would need a 7.5t lisence to drive one, I also have a major crush on 80's Mercedes g-wagons I don't know what it is about the blocky appearance & the picnic cloth seat fabric, but I love them!

I should also add, I'd love a Puch haflinger or any sort of armoured wheeled vehicle

If Suzuki wasn't a thing.....I'd probably have had my Mum's Discovery 300TDi, or we'd have gone looking for a Discovery MPi (the 2 litre fleet-car version) or a Series IIA/III SWB. Those were what I had in mind prior to stumbling across Suzuki SJs on the internet. Hadn't really considered a Jimny because I thought them too cute, though they've grown on me now, especially after seeing the Chimpney in the flesh.

The initial thing behind getting a 4x4 was that I wanted something that would be able to get back home, even in shitty weather as we live on a hill and frequently end up towing other people back to their houses (and when it gets really bad the village can be almost completely cut off if you don't have four wheel drive and decent ground clearance.
On top of that I didn't want to have to get down into and climb out of my car, being tall, unfit and 'big-boned'.

Hindsight's a wonderful thing though. To drive, Land Rover's aren't a patch on SJs. In my opinion, not many things are; the only thing that I can remember off the top of my head is my friend's Metro Turbo.
Land Rovers might be more comfortable and spacious with more luxuries but they are much more wallowy and all of the driver's controls (steering and pedals) feel vague and slow to respond, bar the servo assisted brakes.....Having driven a few cars without brake servos, I can honestly say I much prefer without to with. Brake servos make the brakes very twitchy. In my SJ I can decide exactly how much braking I want, from the tiniest drag to locking up all four, in other cars I find that the movement of the pedal from off to locking up is so small that I find it much more difficult just to bring cars with brake servos to a smooth stop without jolting everyone in the car forwards when I go for the pedal.
