sj413 su carb running like a bag of poo

right just brought a sj413 and it runs really bad. seems to start fine idle fine and rev fine in neutral.
but when in gear it will not rev over 2.5k and wont get past 30mph!!
arghhhh first sj please help guysss

Using / losing oil?
When was it last serviced?
Is the compression ok?
Any strange noises?
How fast is it idling?
Is the throttle cable adjusted right? (Sounds daft i know)

just purchaed the sj so have drove it 20 miles home with it running like crap. gonna have a good look tomorrow, clean carb, fuel filter, vacume hoses ect ect
i took plugs out and they were really i mean really black ( rich rich rich)

Full service. You have a compression tester may aswell do that while the plugs are out.
Lets us know how it runs after a service and tune up.

it sounds like it had a very long time since had any service at all,
like you said check the fuel filter, air filter, carb etc

right, new plugs, carb clean, smarter port matching, new oil, carb adjusted air/fuel screw.
its starts fine, revs fine still in neutral. it is slightly better on road now i mean i can get up to 50mph.
im thinking its starving it of fuel or along that lines, i removed the fuel filter i didnt have one to replace it with. its will run really bad up to about 3.5k and take ages to get up there but then seems to clear up slightly and the power is back.
what are the fuel pumps like on the engine , re they prone to failing?
wats a basic setting to have the air fuel screw at on a su carb? i have it about 1.5 turns out
any suggestions guys?

make sure you have oil in your SUs dashpot, and it might be good to put a new spring in the carb... with a 1300 engine you should have a red marked spring

really annoying now, bogs down till about 3.5k in 3rd then feels like a vtec has kicked in haha and taked ages for it to rev up to 3.5kish before it starts running properly

Sounds like it could have the wrong needle/spring or just needs a tune up. They do bog down at low revs when running too rich.
Check timing, plug gaps etc. first and then.
