Always use a rope that is rated more than the vehicles weight and less than the shackles and recovery point on the vehicle.

If something goes wrong then you want the rope to be the first thing to fail as that will cause the least damage.

Vehicle weight is irrelevant, depends how stuck you are. I worked it out if the SJ had locked axles and was in think bog or clay it would require 3.75t of force to remove it.

That relates to choosing a winch but the force applied remains the same. Unless you are snatching, in which case you should use and approved kinetic recovery rope, appropriately rated.

I found an excellent guide to winching that showed the effects different types and amounts of mud/stuckness and how much it effectively increases your vehicle weight.

I think it works out that if you are stuck over halfway up your wheels, then it effectively doubles the weight you are pulling... Usually when I get stuck its normally a case of mud up the doors so climb out the window ;)

That's got to at least quadruple the weight!

i always tie a small piece of rope loosely around the tow rope and the shackle also so if the rope does snap at either end it doesnt spring away and rip off your genitals.

I always aim for rated ropes and shackles at least 3 times the weight of the vehicle most of my kit is 5ton+ rated.

Personally i'd leave kinetic ropes alone, unless the stuck truck and the recovery truck have very strong recovery points. However when attached and used properly they are very good pieces of kit.

Lucky escape with just a smashed window!
