SJ40 drum breaks

Post by SJ40 » Sun Apr 14, 2013 11:07 pm

I have replaced rear shoes and wheel cylinders. Bled the system many times but still have long break pedal travel and not very good breaking. Vehicle still has 4 wheel drums and original master cylinder. No leaks any where and pedal holds pressure just has lots of travel.???

Have you adjusted the front cylinders as well, as there all manually adjusted.

Assuming you mean a SJ410.

How much travel do you mean? As in hits the floor? The all drum brake models are known for having aweful brakes! Why not upgrade to discs on the front, it's all bolt on.

About half pedal travel and very poor break action even though pedal holds pressure.

I would seriously upgrade the fronts to discs, as said you can't really expect good braking performance from drums on the front.

All you need is the caliper mounts and hangers, calipers, discs, pads and new flexy brake pipes as far as I'm aware.

Don't want to spend too much as it is only a paddock basher. Has anybody ever replaced master cylinder as I think that is all that is left to do, as master cylinder is original could it not be supplying enough fluid pressure even though it does not go to the floor when you hold your foot on the brake pedal.????????
