Can anyone tell me if my santana vit jx 1.6 8v single efi engine should have a sump gasket or should I use RTV? Dose it depend solely on whether there is a crank position sensor or not?
I dont think there is a crank position senso on my vit but should I use rtv or a sump gasket?

Looked at a few diagrams and none showed a gasket. This page is from a 1994 print manual.
I also looked at my grand vitara manual and that shows the same.
You can normally see cork gaskets easily enough.

There is no gasket, the sump is not designed to take one. I did fit one on mu 4u2 once and it just squeezed out when I tightened the sump.

Ok all.. Thanks to your help I have now got the sump off but due to position of front tie rod I cant lower it fully. Seems like I might have to remove the oil pump pickup pipe. Should I be able to remove it without undoing the oil feed? There is a 5mm allen head bold but it seems very tight and I am worried about spoiling the bolt head and ending with a scrap engine. What would you guys suggest please?

So now I found a way to get the sump off without dropping the oil strainer.. Just turn the wheel fully to the right. It moves the tie bar just enough forward to allow you to drop the oil pan without dropping the oul feed pipe.
