Hi my mate has just got a sj 410 with the 1.6 16v vitara conversion . It's not running right . It's was running lumpy like it was on 3 lol it ran 4 10 mins then it backed fired and cut out now it don't start can anyone help me

it could be the timing whats out or maybe the dizzy cap because if it was only a spark plug that had gone it would still start but run rough.

Ok . Well it's was running rough 4 the 10mins it's was running .

We need more info really? Is it running the fuel injection system or been converted to carb?


First place I'd check would be that it's all timed up correctly, if its jumped a few teeth on the cambelt then it's not going to start.

Sounds like the timing is out to me, or something's knackered with the ignition system.

Yes it is on a su carb . I think wre gonna just send it 2 Peter Baldwin a carb expert he is the god on setting up carbs . Cheers anyway boys .

By the sounds of it it's nothing to do with the carb, your problem is timing or ignition related.

A problem with the carb will not cause a misfire. Have you checked that all the plugs are sparking and the timing is set up correctly

Also as its a 16v what have they done to convert it to run a 8v dizzy? The 16v dizzy will not work with a carb set up and the 8v dizzy isn't a direct swap and either needs a custom dizzy housing made or the head drilled and tapped to bolt on an 8v dizzy housing.

Yes peter will check the timing and all that stuff then he will put it on the rolling road . The plugs are New an sparking well . Not sure about the dizzy cap tho the all the work was done in a place called Brighton . Who does this work 4 a living so u would think it would come back running right .

the last time mine back fired was on the way to devon last year. was havin some runnin probs on the way too. I jumped out and gave the carb a tweak (su) and all was well!
it would appear it was runnin a bit lean at the time

The only time mine has backfired was when I put the dizzy on 180 degrees wrong.
