Hello, recently purchased an SJ so thought I would introduce myself on here

I found my SJ on the Ebay site and after watching the bidding stuck in a bid and got the beastie

So what did I get!

I'm now the 10th owner of a Black (sport) 1987 Suzuki SJ410 Santana.

Needless to say it requires a bit of work! The first thing I did was to drive the anus to the MOT station. Well lets just say, its got issues!

On first impressions the car did not look too bad, but after buying the car and driving it down the road it became clear there were a few things that need sorting out.
1, the windscreen wipers did not work.
2, the headlights did not work unless you twisted the stalk and pulled it back to click on main beam
3, It leaks rather badly ....Found unplugged holes all over the bulkhead, floor pan and other areas
5 interior light not working
4, handbrake did not work
6, Electrical issues
7 paintwork is a bit tired and believe it or not I found a couple of rust spots
8 rear bumper and rear light clusters falling apart.
9 driving/spot lamps not wired up on roo bar.
10 lower dash broken (cracked plastic)
11 there are a few other issues too but I think the list could go on and on

But in spite of all the above, I like it.

The plan is to return this SJ into a fun street cruiser for my son as his first car.

I'm only a DIY enthusiast type guy and not a trained mechanic, but hopefully folks on here will be able to steer me in the right direction on where to get parts and additional services when needed? Ive generally done my own servicing of cars, mainly because Ive not really been able to afford main dealer prices.

Sounds like your going to be busy! I hope you can weld sjs are about as easy as it gets to work on so I'm sure you'll have no problems sorting everything out.

Welcome to the club. Certainly sounds like a project.

As scottie says nothing is easier to work / practice mechanics on than an SJ.

Ive got my teeth into it already,
First thing I did was to get the anus up on axle stands / ramps.
I disconnected the rear prop shaft and dismantled the Hand brake drum on the back of the transfer box. Needless to say there was not a lot of meat left on the Brake shoes!
After searching eBay and local car accessory shops I had all but given up trying to find replacement brake shoes. My local auto accessory shop managed to order me a replacement set but when they turned up they did not have the arm fitted to them and I was not happy with the hole positions, even though the guy in the shop insisted they were the correct ones! I ended up ordering a set from Suzuki.
Well they made it to the local dealer, then all of a sudden the dealership went bust! (no I'm not making this up, it was Epsom Motor Group) and I could not get my hands on the new shoes.

So with plan B out the window I resorted to plan C. After searching on the Internet, I found a place in Bedfordshire that re-lines the original brake shoes. One week later, New shoes in hand and each new lining cost a massive £5.00 So all in £10 + vat and postage, Bargain.

I'm located just inside the M25 near Reigate in Surrey

The rear bumper (what was left of it) was rotten, i found evidence of glass fibre and shoddy workmanship all over the place. I managed to buy a brand new rear bumper from Suzuki (£100) and have also fully rebuilt the rotten rear light clusters. The windscreen frame was very rotten so I found a replacement via eBay for £50 with everything attached, wipers motor screen etc.

So how do I post pics on here? Do I have to open an account with photobucket or something?

Oh ... Welding and electrics are not really things I'm very good at, I used an Arc welder once and....Well lets just say it was messy :(
I do need welding done on the anus and I want new steel put in place of the rusty bits. I don't do plastic padding and fibreglass to cover holes
