ITS RUNNING!! a few fuelling questions however....

Ok so FINALLY got the 1.6 running in the SJ, after alot of problems concerning starter motors. Got hold of a 1.6 Vit Bosch starter and it worked a treat. :mrgreen:

Anyway......I've converted to an HIF44 with rockwatt manifold and have had the engine running but it only seems to keep running if I hold the choke in full on position. Whilst its fully on I can rev it with the throttle just fine and it picks up great (not under load as I dont have a bracket made for the cable just yet)

But if I let the choke spring back it just dies and the throttle on its own wont keep it running, and it dies.

My main concern is excess fuel flooding out of the overflow and breather hose. Let me explain....

Basically I'm under the impression that
A is fuel inlet
B is overflow (connected to my tank return line)
C is air vent to atmosphere (connected to a hose that goes to the drain behind headlight)

If the engine is running (choke on) it'll run fine but after a little while fuel will start coming out of hose C.

I swapped B with a piece of hose to atmosphere, and fuel came out of B instead of C this time :|

The other connections and breathers are all blocked off and I'm using a low pressure pump, the same type everyone seems to use. Do I need a regulator or something?

What is stopping the engine running without the choke? Bare in mind I dont have any cables connected yet just doing it by hand but I assume the "resting position" of the throttle and choke spindles is more or less where they sit under normal conditions.

Havent seen a hif 44 with those connections before.

The way the choke works on my hif44 would suggest to me that it is underfulled as it only starst to add fuel when it is really well on.

Could you post some better photos of how its connected

Yeah, it sounds like it's really lean. I'd say make sure the needle is right and wind the mixture screw out some.

Its possible, I adjusted the mixture to roughly 3.5 turns out as a starting point and it was better than it was at first.

Also I found the "piston" that moves up with vacuum inside the carb was stuck down, its free now but its harder to start with it like this (leaner??)

What kind of pics do you mean? The above ones basically show what hoses are connected to where. I cant work out why its overflowing even with the engine running, maybe not enough fuel getting into the engine so its filling the float bowl up?

Needle is correct however I havent got a yellow spring, still got the red but cant see that causing problems at idle

Just hopeing that from a more detailed photo another user may be able to identify the connections from the castings on the carb body. Looks similar to Eds hif38.

Doubt the spring will make much difference at all tbh. Maybe a slightly slower take up if at all.

Yes, the hose connections on it look like they're the same as on my carb.

Try venting 'B' to atmosphere rather than putting it on the fuel return and see if that helps. I think it was Scottie who told me that the carb overflow is some sort of emergency feature.

Yeah the overflow is purely for if the float gets stuck open.

Thanks for the info guys!!

Ive also discovered what part of the problem may well be....it turns out the carb IS an HIF38 not an HIF44 which it was advertised as so I'm a little annoyed at this. I should have checked upon receipt of it but just assumed it was right :tosser: :cry:

You're welcome. It gave me chance to try out the close up focus of my new camera that I got for my birthday a few days ago.

Unlucky about the carb though.

That's a bit of a bummer! Just bung it up for sale, people often want the hif38 for their SJ410s :thumbup:
