Specific info required on a sj410 4 speed gearbox please

I've just removed my gearbox and split it down to replace the bearings and oil seals but I've bumped in to something which I hope can be answered by someone more experienced than me.

The two bearings which fit on the main gear wheel shaft have a groove cut in to the outer face in to which fits a half ring - a bit like a circlip without the knobbly bits on the end. The upper and lower casings have corresponding grooves to allow the half ring to lie in the groove. My questions are, should each bearing have two halves so that the grooves are fully encircled?

If one half ring is correct for each bearing, should the half ring be placed so that it sits on top of the bearing, underneath the bearing or half verticle so that it engages with a portion of the top and bottom casings? As I write this I wonder if these half rings are in fact thrust washers, but I still don't know how they should be orientated?

Finally the above detail may be standard for all sj gearboxes but my manuals make no reference to this and I've not split one before.

Thanks

Ian

The parts listing only show them as one half. I would think it does not matter which orientation they are fitted although sitting underneath would be easier to fit ? I assume these just stop/locate the bearing so it/they cannot move sideways.

Edit: for a better/clearer diagram

Drawing shows half moon , but the bearing numbers show a almost complete snapring.
I assume it just makes the drawing clearer, or is that just part number 21 ?

I can't find the diagram you found earlier but it may well have been mine. I believe I removed it, not actually having done a gearbox rebuild as I was afraid of any errors. All this info is just what I can find on the net and therefore can not guarantee it's 100 percent correct.

I have checked the part numbers from the 410 diagram and although some of the part numbers do not match the bearing sizes do.

Thanks again Darrell - will study everything you've sent me in the morning. I'll start speaking with bearing suppliers tomorrow also. As an aside, my clutch is fine but the release bearing is not too wonderful so I started looking for a supplier for this - couldn't believe the price - over £40.00, when you can get a complete clutch kit for about £70.00!
