I have just fitted a head gasket and a new piston the barrel was only slightly scoured so rubbed it down with emery cloth have it all together and it is smoking like hell what have i done wrong????

Could it just be all the oily residue etc from handling all the internals burning off or is it smoking big time?
What exactly did you change/renew?

No its burning big time!
I replaced the piston with another from a running engine and all the gaskets
does oil run through the inlet manifold?
I think it could possibly be the oil rings on the piston that i replaced but i do hope not!!!!

Oil shouldnt be running through the inlet manifold, no. You may get a bit of vapour from the rocker cover breather though.
Have you overfilled it with oil or anything like that? Cam timing is correct?

Is this the same engine you had the water problem with?
I'm a bit confused as to why the piston was swapped? What was wrong with the old one? Also if the other engine was a running one why didn't you just fit the whole thing?
There are no oilways in the inlet manifold if that's what you mean?
I am a bit confused as to why you completely stripped the engine after asking for the last bit of advice. how much experience with mechanics and building engines do you have? is there someone helping you? To be honest I'm not really sure if cleaning up a scored cylinder with emery paper is really a good idea. Cylinders need to be as perfectly round as possible and really you should get a new set of piston rings and also get the cylinders honed to ensure they seat properly. The least you should do is deglaze the cylinders with a 'home honing' kit rather than just bunging in a piston from another engine.

No different engine this is the original engine and not the one with the water problem!
The piston had broken up on one side in this engine, so i had to replace it from the other engine(one with the water issues) the marks on the barrel were next to nothing so used finest cloth to remove and now is perfectly smooth, Why should you replace rings if they were functioning in the old engine? (I had a honing kit but was no need to use)
So any answers rather than asking!!
Thanks

It's normally a good idea to replace the rings as they will be worn/seated to the original engine and may not seal properly in the other engine. Do a compression test to eliminate this possibility

I'm not trying to be an arse but look at it from our point of view. You originally posted with a water problem and then the next post you have the engine in bits and are changing a piston?? We don't know that you have swapped to a different engine so it comes across as quite a random thing to be doing when a piston has nothing to do with the cooling system.
Diagnosing problems isn't the easiest thing to do over the internet, especially when someone doesn't explain what exactly they have done, hence the questions.
No two engines are exactly the same its just better practice to use new rings to ensure they seat and seal properly, also just because a cylinder 'looks' ok doesn't necessarily mean its not out of round.
What colour is the smoke? I presume blue as you say its oil?
First thing to do is check the pcv valve is clean and working.
Then do a compression test, do all the cylinders have similar readings?

Yes blue smoke
Thats more like it what is the pcv valve and where is it?
Thanks

Its sticking out of the inlet manifold right next to the engine. It should have a vacuum hose on it
