This advert showed before a video on youtube.

I have to say, I thought having all the stuff running on petrol/diesel engines looked pretty damned cool. Like steampunk but not steam.

Yeah its a great advert! :D

Petrol powered phones might not be such a good idea though!

A sort of similar one I like is the Avios

Actually, that advert has got me thinking. I'll tell you what:

When they finally get hydrogen fuel cells figured out properly, I wouldn't mind having a Suzuki SJ 4FCEV (fuel cell electric vehicle). I have no problem with electric motors (although you would lose some of the quirks of the old octane burner), it's how you power them that makes most electric cars such polished turds at the moment.

Wiki here if anyone's interested.

Long-short of it. All the advantages of internal combustion (fuel filling, low weight) and electric (efficient, zero emissions), save for the lack of exhaust noise.

You'd only need two gears, forward and reverse, as an electric motor gives constant torque at all speeds and some can spin up to 30,000 rpm.

Not sure I fancy 80mph in reverse though.

I like the advert. I think its great, & that everyone should go out and buy electric cars. Get them plugged in and get using that mains electricity & keep me in a job!

Yeah! Wait until the SJ electric motor conversion is available I'll big it up especially if its close to a million watts! It will Keep my station steaming & I'll use my overtime to pay for petrol in my SJ!

I reckon an electric SJ would be rubbish.... think about what parts go as soon as they see a splash of mud...

Alternator, starter motor, and basically anything else electrical!
You'd just be replacing the one reliable thing under the bonnet with something much less waterproof! :hahaha:

It depends what type of motor is used, you can buy marine grade motors that are sealed & used in submerged jobs, apparantly oil rigs use a motor in each support leg it lives submerged in sea water & its pretty much garunteed for the life of the station because replacing them is such an expensive job. The thing is marine grade motors are expensive but if you take your SJ off road a lot it would be worth it. Because of motor torque properties they would probably be better off road trickling along at 5mph with fulltorque wheras if you had a 410 engine for the full torque you need to be running 4800 rpm (i think that's the peak torque)
