Hi all i have been a suzuki sj410 owner for 2 years now and have enjoied every minute!, However a month back i changed the oil (10w40) in my anus and immediately after my engine started smoking heavily throughout running it got slightly better when warm but still was really heavy smoke under acceleration and on idle, I then replaced the engine with an apparently good replacement but kept all the ancillaries carb, dizzy e.t.c, i also changed the head gasket and cam belt on the engine for peace of mind. Today i filled the engine up with oil (10w40) and fired it up i was so pleased it started on the key and sounded mint! however shortly after my drive way was filled with blue smoke, well there was alot of f ing and blinding haha, then engine also started runnin like crap idling all ova da place bt i put this dwn 2 the ammount of oil being burnt!, can anyone help? i started thinking it was the oil cld i use a thicker grade? cheers all

hi fella if its blue smoke your burning id be inclined to say youve atleast cracked a piston ring or possibly more than one. good luck im sure somebody else will have some other suggestions soon.

dont want you to take offence or anything but howmuch oil are you putting in? ifyour overfilling it it will push oil past the rings, corect amounts just over 4 litres (for the 1300cc engine at least!)

also, have you cleaned your pcv valve? if this gets gummed up it cause to much crankcase pressure which in turn will push oil past the rings,

with regards to the oil, they do have working life's if your using an old oil youve had kicking about your garage fora decade or so(with the lid off!) it wont be up to much, try with fresh oil, if you have your haynes it tells you what oil you can run, i use 10w30 i suppose its just because im serendipity

Hi all cheers 4 replies they are much appreciated, In reply to some of the q's, the oil was fresh 10w 40 bought the same day, so thats ruled out,The oil is at the correct level on the dipstick, so thats ruled out. But ah where is the engines pcv valve as this may b the cause? cheers Phil

Found between the carb and the head/engine.
The PCV valve governs the amount of fumes from the engine fed back into the engine after the carb so your mechanic is also correct as, depending on the pressure difference between the engine and in let manifold, the engine could run lean (or even like a bag of bolts if the valve is blocked and the carb badly set up).

The valve is a simple ball bearing and spring and should be flushed out well with carb cleaner/wd40 with every 10,000km service to keep it clean.

This pipe also has a 'T' connector above the PCV valve that vents any extra fumes not used by the PCV valve/manifold back into the engine before the carb (via the air filter box inside of the air filter so as not to clog it up with crappy oil filled gasses) and then into the carb itself and is used with the air/fuel mixture.

This excess pipe (to air box) can be left disconnected but the carbs fuel/air mixture should be set for if the feed back is either connected or disconnected as it can alter how the engine runs.

have you tryed putting thicker oil in? if the piston rings are worn oil will be able to seep past, a thicker oil should help prevent this.

Hiya cheers again for advice and replys, Im goin 2 go out now and check that valve as it sounds a likely candidate as its off the original engine, and if that doesnt work i will try running a slightly thicker grade of oil, cheers and hopefully that has solved my problem, What a great forum im well pleased cheers phil

Evening all had a spare 5 mins in the christmas rush hehe and went out to check my pcv valve i firstly removed the piping to the valve and then removed the valve which seems to be fine :-( it rattles if you shake it and you can blow through it. I then checked all the piping which had a sum oil and s##t in it so i cleaned that all out. I then stuck a screw driver in the breather port on the rocker cover and it got stuck and when i removed it it was thick in crap, the rocker cover was on the original engine so :-) might be the cause, i then removed the rocker cover and splash guard for the breather and it was full of crap so iv now cleaned it all out so tommorow il see what she runs like but im feelin comfident :-) cheers all

Hi all again managed to get a bit of free time and pulled the sj out and fired her up, she started on the key and sounded sweet :-) give it 10 seconds and the smoke began :-( again, on the plus it ran alot better and a bit less smokey so im gonna put an engine flush through it and then drain the oil and replace with 15w 40 to see if that is any different, and if not im thinking and engine conversion  something tasty hehe cheers all for adivce e.t.c
