Strange Sj Problem with Ballast Resistor ?

Bit of a strange one this, But my SJ410 has a very anoying problem which only happens when laneing. Its been going on for over a year now and to start with I thought it was Carb but after checking the carb and finding nothing I then changed the coil which seemed to cure it untill I laned it again .

As I said Its fine on road and I drive it every day to work and back but as soon as I hit some lanes it starts, I can drive the lanes fine and then as soon as I hit tarmac again and try to build up speed it coughs and splutters and then cuts out. I can jump out pop the bonnet wiggle the 2 wires on the ballast resistor fitted to the coil and all is fine again. Untill the lane / tarmac / cut out cycle starts again

As I said I have changed the coil plus been right through the ignition system just waiting on a replacement ballast resistor to try but its a pain to test as I need to lane it to get the fault to occur.

I have read about ballast resistors and spoken to Mechanics at work and the whole thing makes no sense to anybody.

Any Ideas ?

sounds like a poor connection in the resistor to me cos when your laning the wiring will be moving more than when your on smooth roads (do we have them in england?) when it is wiggled back to normal it works ok id change the resistor first.
good luck ps ill ask me bro hes a mechanic (of sorts!)

Hi there,

I can't imagine that it's the ballast resistor as they are usually quite reliable. I would also suggest to check all your connections as the resistor is likely to work or not work and not muck about in between as you are experiencing.

If you really can't solve it, you could get a 2nd hand ballast resistor from Neil at Rhinoforce on 07855415304 as I'm sure he's got one. Then you'll know for sure if it's that.

I hope you solve it by cleaning all connectors and earths etc first though.

Check the HT leads haven't burn't back up, i had a similar problem and couldn't work out why it would struggle to get up to speed, after being under the bonnet it would work for say 5 mins then really struggle and it was because i kept knocking the HT lead so i replaced it and that was better. Only an Idea
