Engine won't run without starter

Hey this is my first post on here as i'm new to this and the world of SJ's.

Right having put a con road though the side of the first engine, I sourced and fitted a replacement over the weekend. All seem to to be ok except it doesn't want to run  When I turn the key it fires up and sounds sweet, however when I release the key she pops and dies. Basically the engine will not run without being cranked by the starter. Any ideas? I am no mechanical expert so go gentle with me

Does it run with the starter engaged?

Have you touched the ignition, barrel or ignition wiring?

Tried bump starting it?

No havn't touched the ignition at all and havn't tried to bumb start it yet

The engine runs when the starter is engaged, sorry should have made that clear. As soon as you release the key it dies almost instantly

I would check for spark, fuel.

What engine is it? was it running when it came out?

Its a standard 413 G13A engine(hope that's right) that I bought of ebay as a runner. By the sounds of it it's a decent running engine, just can't get to run properly. Ive checked fuel, plugs and spark and all seems ok. Like I have said the engine runs on the starter motor so I'm assuming that it's an electrical issue, maybe dizzy, earth or something. Was maybe hoping it was something of a regular occurence or something someone has come across before.

It should not be running when the starter is engaged. The starter does not spin fast enough.

I would try to bump start it and see what happens. If it will only turn over when the starter is engaged, and will not fire by itself i would look at the spark, and possibly the timing.

Obviously the starter just 'fouls' once the engine starts but as soon as you release the key from the starting position the engine then just dies. The engine runs at that point so it is nothing to do with spark or timing I have checked that. I guess it must be an electrical glitch somewhere, guess that will be my weekend plan 8-)

Sounds like a wiring issue to me

Have you got a volt meter? If so turn the ignition on and check you have voltage at the coil. It sounds like the coil is not getting a power feed with the ignition on but is getting one when the key is in the start position. You have either wired it wrong or the ignition switch is playing up.

there should be two black (w/white tracer) wires going to the coil + one from the dizzy and one from the loom.

have a look in the stickies at the top of the electrical section (wiring a vit 8v into 410 and there is a useful wiring diagram  ) they could help you track your problem.
