Alternator looks new will have to check it tomorrow,just 4 small spots on roof,any idea best way to check alternator ?

Use a multimeter across the battery, should read around 12.4 volts without the engine running and around 14.4+ volts with the engine running. What wattage are the bulbs in your spots?

With full beams and 4 spots the alternator should be putting out enough power as that is less than a 30amp drain and the stock alt has a 45amp output.

If the alternator wasn't charging wouldn't the dash light come on ? I'm off tomorrow so I get the meter out and hav a check

It might be charging....a bit; just enough to keep the warning light off.

Or the warning light might be dead too.

is there an 'upgrade'/ higher output alternator that'll go on the sj without much hassle?

Well tested alternator and it wasn't charging so a quick trip to local sparky ,it now as new brushes and new bearing and it's back to 100% ,job sorted :doublethumbs:

I think there is ,have a look at this 280745341670 on eBay
