Identifying BOATs

Soon as my Sammys done i plan to go greenlaning, but how do you identify them?
I have various OS maps and a philps navigator they both show tracks but the small print always states it may not be a right of way?
Ive tried finding info on GLASS and LARA but cant find anything definitive. Is it a case of just go looking and see if there are any signs? Like 'tresspassers will be shot', TROs or '4x4s welcome'.
I know someone on here can help. All ive ever done is pay n play but i think its time to venture outside now.
Is there already a post on this subject?
Cheers
Jordi

best things to do are contact your local rights of way officer, contact details should be on your local councils website. check on trailwise
http://www.trailwise.org.uk/view_track.php
and make sure there are no notices at the beginning of each byway when you get there.

The byways are usually marked with green crosses marked byway on OS maps

the problem i have found recently in this area is that ALL the byway signs have been riped off the posts.
all the rest seem to be led down in the nearest bushes...
also one thing you have to remember is it don't matter when you bought your os maps
they will now be out of date.
i tend to use the excuse that iam using the most recent map's.
but.
i don't know how lng this will last.
only last week we drove a very nice lane (i won't name it here)
if you enter the lane from the south byway sign.
if you enter from the north (heading south) there is a restricted byway sign.
so does that mean you are only breaking the law driving south .?????
who knows...

We have an abundance of lanes in the yorkshire dales many of which have no signs at all. I have followed some in the past but they never go very far.
Reason im trying to find out how to identify them properly is to see if i can make routes that will take two or three days and make a mini camping expedition out of it.
That is once calmini decide to send me sum suspension! And my petrol tanks been delayed. Shud be done this saterday. Might even get it fitted whilst the wifes away.

quite interesting that. last year me and my friends were out in a small group and came across a byway with a council sign next to it. i cant remember what it said exactly but it was along the lines of "you can drive this along this road but we accept no responsibility blah blah. there was a toll road running right next to the green lane
it went down the side of a golf course. the men in the security booth looked like they wanted to say something so we quickly carried on. but there was no sign saying restricted or vehicles not allowed.. so?
i just stick to the lanes i know! my mate finds and drives unknown ones and then leads the groups.
