Rear Disc Conversion.

Post by tomcat » Wed Sep 27, 2023 12:02 am

Have tried to go through the wealth of information on this subject, most seems from many years ago. Reference is made to information no longer available.

Simple question I have:-
Can I fit Rover 600 calipers with Front SJ 413 discs? What handbrake arrangement would I then need?

Any comments, references greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The most common swap is to fit front sj calipers to the rear and then run the transmission handbrake off earlier SJs. They aren’t that hard to find second hand. The main issue with that is that the rear ends up over braked.

I recently started a thread where i discovered that certain vw/Audi Lucas calipers fit the sj Lucas carrier so that’s an option for a calliper that fits the easily available adapter plates with a handbrake. I haven’t taken it any further yet so you would have to work out the cable set up yourself but I was planning on just using some vw/Audi handbrake cables and adapting it at the handbrake lever end.

I had seen your post on VW / Audi calipers.
I am not up to speed with transmission handbrake off early SJ's. Will research that.

I used mx5 rear calipers and they work very effectively. Involves a little bit of fabrication though. Well worth the little bit of effort.
My other SJ uses the 410 transfer box handbrake and when adjusted right is also a good handbrake. Only problem there is the handbrake cables arent easily obtainable new anymore.

Had seen about using mx5 calipers.
Another option I am looking at.

A rear disc conversion is ongoing with refurbished calipers, discs and pads obtained.
Purchased an early SJ413 transfer box with handbrake attachment. On removing the cover rather "muddy" interior was revealed.

First stage remove dried mud and remove 4 No backplate attachment bolts.
